SAN MARCELINO, Zambales — The San Marcelino District Hospital (SMDH) received four Green Stars from the Department of Health’s Central Luzon Center for Health Development in recognition of its viability as a climate-smart, sustainable, and disaster-resilient medical institution.

SMDH Chief of Hospital Dr. Cresencio Gonzales Jr. said the government-operated facility received an 89.62% rating during the DOH monitoring and validation on September 15.

“From 3 Green Stars in 2025, we received 4 Green Stars this year,” Gonzales said.

“This rating mirrors the continuing effort of SMDH to improve its program and services, the dedication and discipline of the staff, and the collective resolve to promote a safe, clean, green, and quality facility,” he added.

The Department of Health (DOH) implements the Green Viability Assessment (GVA) to reduce the health sector’s carbon footprint and ensure facilities can withstand climate-driven disasters and safeguard patient safety.

The assessment covers energy and water efficiency, waste management, disaster resilience, and environment and accessibility.

NEW ENDOSCOPY SYSTEM

Meanwhile, the SMDH also announced the recent acquisition of a gastrointestinal endoscopy machine that enables medical personnel to examine a patient’s internal organs and conduct biopsies to diagnose illnesses.

The machine, a Fuji Eluxeo Lite 6000 Multi-LED Endoscope System, is an advanced multi-LED endoscopic imaging system that outputs full high-definition images and videos using white light to depict subjects in natural color and short-wavelength light for higher contrast.

Dr. Gonzales Jr. said the new system would enable hospital staff to perform upper endoscopy to examine the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum, as well as duodenoscopy to access the bile and pancreatic ducts.

The system can also be used for colonoscopy, which examines the inside of the large intestine, including the colon and rectum.

Gonzales advised patients wishing to undergo endoscopic examination to prepare their IDs, update their PhilHealth membership card, and register at the SMDH’s PhilHealth YAKAP Clinic to avail of the procedure. – Taktikom News & Features
