SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) has recognized business locators and port users that contributed significant impact to its vision of turning Subic into a Green Port City.

In a ceremony held last Monday at the ACEA Subic Beach Resort, the Subic agency gave the “Green Anchor” awards to 15 topnotch companies in terms of trade volume, five firms with outstanding sustainability programs, and five government agencies and business groups that boosted economic growth in the Port of Subic.

SBMA Chairman and Administrator Jose Eduardo L. Aliño, who presented the awards along with key SBMA officials, said the awards formally recognized port stakeholders who strengthened the agency’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable port development.

“This ceremony is more than an event. It is a declaration of what the Port of Subic stands for,” Aliño said. “It marks our aspiration to build a green port city that is not only competitive and resilient, but also responsible—a port that anchors growth to sustainability, and progress to protection of our shared natural resources.”

Aliño explained that SBMA efforts to align Subic’s port modernization with global sustainability standards need collaboration from every stakeholder who believes in building a greener, more resilient Subic.

The Green Anchor Awards, he concluded, “celebrate those who choose to go beyond compliance—those who innovate, who invest, who adjust their operations because they understand that sustainability is not just a requirement—it is a responsibility (and) also smart economics.”

For the awards launch, the SBMA gave the Emerald citation to companies that generated significant cargo volume: San Miguel Foods Corp., importer of ingredients for animal feeds; FLS Group Philippines, importer of solar panels; Worldwide Logistics Group, Philippines (solar panel imports); Yokohama Tire Philippines Inc. (raw rubber importer); Nestle Philippines Inc. (packed food products importer); Juken Sangyo Philippines Corp. (logs and lumber importer);

Philippine Resins Industries Inc. (resins importer); HLD Clark Steel Pipe Company Inc. (steel pipes exporter); Datian Subic Shoes Inc. (cow suede leather importer); Ecossential Foods Corp. (packed food products and coffee importer); Maersk Lines Limited; Evergreen Lines; SITC Container Lines; Mediterranean Shipping Company; and CMA-CGM Lines.

Next, the SBMA chose those with exemplary programs in pollution prevention, waste management, safety, energy efficiency, biodiversity protection, and community partnership for the Sustainability awards: Subic Bay Freeport Grains Terminal Services Inc.; Philippine Coastal Storage and Pipeline Corp.; Pure Petroleum Corp.; Subic Bay International Terminals Corp.-ICTSI Subic Inc.; and United Auctioneers Inc.

Lastly, the SBMA chose private and government organizations that played a crucial role in the growth of the Subic port and bestowed on them the Partners in Progress awards: Association of International Shipping Lines Inc.; Alliance of Concerned Truck Owners and Organizations; Philippine Chamber of Customs Brokers, Inc. Subic-Clark Chapter; Bureau of Customs; and Bureau of Internal Revenue.

SBMA Senior Deputy Administrator for Port Operations Ronnie R. Yambao said the Green Anchor Awards is the first recognition platform in the country to honor champions in advancing trade and sustainability initiatives in support of a green port program.

He said the SBMA has prioritized a P250-million shore power connection project (SPCP), which would minimize pollution by ships on anchor, to boost Subic’s bid to become a carbon-neutral port, the first in the country.

Phase 1 development, which would focus on the New Container Terminal, is set to start in next year, while Phase 2 covering the Naval Supply Depot and Ship Repair Facility would be implemented in 2027 to 2028, Yambao added.
