MALACAÑANG has suspended work in government offices under the Executive Branch starting 1 p.m. on Monday, September 22, in observance of the 33rd National Family Week.

Under Memorandum Circular (MC) No. 96 issued on Friday, government work hours were shortened on September 22 to give employees the opportunity to celebrate the annual Family Week and the “Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga” Day.

The last week of September of every year has been declared Family Week under Proclamation No. 60 (s. 1992), while the fourth Monday of September of every year was declared “Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga” Day under Proclamation No. 326 (s. 2012).

“This Office also encourages all government workers in the Executive branch to fully support the programs and activities relative to the observance of Family Week, as organized by the National Committee on the Filipino Family,” stated MC No. 96 issued by Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin.

The shortened government work hours on September 22, however, does not apply to agencies whose functions involve the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness/response to disasters and calamities, and/or the performance of other vital services, as they shall continue their operations and render the necessary services.

The Palace encouraged the similar suspension of work for the rest of the government and the private sector to observe the National Family Week.

“The suspension of work in other branches of government, independent commissions or bodies, and private sector is also encouraged, so as to afford all Filipino families the full opportunity to celebrate the 33rd National Family Week,” said Malacañang.

The annual celebration of Family Week aims to “fortify solidarity in the family” and “ensure nationwide awareness of the importance of the family,” under Proclamation No. 60 (s. 1992).

Celebrating “Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga” Day, meanwhile, highlights the “value of families sharing meals together as a national tradition.”

“One of the meaningful traditions of Filipinos is the common family meal where all members of the family are present to signify their unity and thanksgiving for God’s abundant blessings,” stated Proclamation No. 326 (s. 2012).

“Having a common family meal encourages parents to stay connected with their children and understand the challenges they face,” the proclamation added. – PND
