World Bank reviews FishCoRe project in Zambales

SUBIC, Zambales — A team from the World Bank recently visited the municipalities of Subic, Botolan, Masinloc, and Sta. Cruz in Zambales to assess the ongoing implementation of the Fisheries and Coastal Resiliency (FishCoRe) Project.

Joining them were representatives from the National Project Management Office (NPMO) and local government units.

The visit aimed to evaluate project milestones, engage with stakeholders, and ensure that initiatives are effectively contributing to sustainable fisheries management, livelihood improvement, and community resilience.

The team met with fisherfolk and local officials to discuss the project’s impact and explore opportunities to further strengthen coastal fisheries.

Commercial fisher, Fausto Alpay of Subic, shared positive feedback on the project’s impact. “Malaking tulong ang FishCoRe sa amin. Mas magiging maayos ang aming hanapbuhay, at may suporta kami sa makabago at sustenableng pamamaraan ng pangingisda,” he said.

FishCoRe is a flagship initiative aimed at strengthening the resilience of coastal communities by improving fisheries management, enhancing livelihoods, and promoting sustainable practices.

As the lead for Fisheries Management Area (FMA) 6, BFAR 3 plays a crucial role in ensuring that these efforts align with national fisheries policies and the needs of local stakeholders.

BFAR 3 Director Wilfredo Cruz reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enhancing fisheries governance and improving the livelihoods of coastal communities. He also expressed appreciation for the continued support of the World Bank and NPMO in advancing sustainable fisheries development in the region.

With FishCoRe’s ongoing efforts, coastal communities in Zambales are gaining the tools and support they need to build a more sustainable future. (BFAR)
