OLONGAPO CITY — The local government of Olongapo formally launched its 911 emergency hotline number during the 55th cityhood anniversary on June 1.
According to Mayor Rolen Paulino Jr. they have tested the system for a few months to fine-tune it before the launch and train essential personnel on the 911 system used in the United States.
He added that last month when the 911 system in the National Capital Region temporarily went down, it was Olongapo that handled 911 calls all over the country from as far as Basilan.
“I’m proud that we are more than capable with this system, and this is another achievement for the city,” Paulino said. “Now Olongapeños will just have to remember 911 and not every hotline number for fire, accidents or medical emergencies.”
The command center for Olongapo’s 911 system is under the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office headed by Angie Layug.
“Our command center is composed of our rescue personnel, PNP, BFP and barangay so that there will be easy access and personnel and assets can be deployed immediately,” Paulino said.
He also appealed to the public to use the hotline number for emergencies only.
“I am very happy and proud that Olongapo is one of the few LGUs that has this kind of system. It is a big help for our residents,” he added.
The 911 system will complement the city’s rescue team which has earned a Gawad Kalasag Hall of Fame award for its rescue operations and disaster management program. ~
