Local islands get more attention in face of Boracay closure

IN FACE of the planned closure of Boracay Island for environmental reasons, the province of Zambales is getting attention from travelers and tour agencies that seek alternative beach destinations.

In particular, the islands of Magalawa in Palauig and Potipot in Candelaria now stand out as huge candidates for “the next Boracay” title. Both are known for white sand beaches, pristine waters and an unadulterated environment—qualities that first endeared Boracay to tourists from all over the world.

In the April 20 article “The search for the next Boracay: Magalawa Island, Zambales”, Gillan Ropero of ABS-CBN News described Magalawa as a secluded island where visitors can pitch their own tent for a “do-it-yourself travel adventure.”

Ropero also came out with postcard-perfect photos of the island’s features, including its famous sandbar, as well as that of a visitor resting on a hammock slung from a tree.

“There are only two resorts on the island: Ruiz Resort and Armada Resort,” Ropero wrote. “Both offer tent pitching and packages inclusive of boat transportation, meals, snorkeling, and accommodation.”

She said both resorts offer day tours and overnight packages, and visitors can pitch their own tent or rent some at the island.

Magalawa is now “a rising star on social media,” Ropero said, “as many backpackers are eyeing it as a do-it-yourself travel adventure.”

Potipot Island, on the other hand, has been getting much attention even before news of Boracay closure came out.

In the April 28, 2017 article “5 beach getaway alternatives to #LaBoracay”, Kara Santos placed Potipot second on her list.

The island scored points for its quiet and accessibility, beautiful white sand beach and plentiful shade trees.

The island getaway has recently offered facilities for “glamping” but has retained its allure for its rustic, back-to-nature atmosphere.
